RACHEL

Seriously? My stomach twisted into a tight knot. I wanted to say something, anything, but the words were stuck to the sides of my dry mouth.

Oh God. His mom sent her here.

Calm down. I didn’t need to feel guilty. He brought me here because of my job. If his mom knew about this place and suspected he’d bring me here, then she should also realize this was for the pitch. Not for any other reason.

I lifted my chin. “Nice to see you again, Jessica.”

Ben stared her down. “How the hell did you know about this place?”

She smirked. “Are you kidding me? Really, Ben. You told me about this beach once and how you wanted to build something permanent here. When your mom said you were taking Rachel somewhere special, I knew it had to be here. Nice digs, by the way.”

“Why are you here now?” he asked in a hard tone.

She raised a brow. “We’re up for the same contract, right? I only thought it was fair that I saw it too. You wouldn’t want to give one of us an unfair advantage, right?”

Ben gave her an icy stare. No, he definitely did not know Jessica would be here. “Now that you’ve seen it, you can go.”

Jessica fingered the leather handle on top of the basket. “I’m sure there’s enough in here for three. I wouldn’t want to miss out on anything else. Especially if it might affect my pitch.”

He went rigid. “There is nothing we’ll talk about that you haven’t already seen.”

She flipped her hair. “Fine. I need to drop by the hotel to chat with the chef about a few things for tonight anyway,” she said, and eyed me from head to toe. She was wearing a designer bikini and I’m sure she noted I wasn’t.

“I spoke with the chef this morning. It’s too late to change anything for tonight.”

“Always so efficient. Then I guess I’ll be on my way. After all, you’re just showing her around, right?” She lifted one corner of her mouth with such grace I’d wager she spent hours practicing it.

“Next time, text,” he said in a curt, dismissive tone.

“Or, since I’m here, you can show me around too.” She spun around and waved her hand at the room. “After all, I didn’t even know you’d finally built on this place. What other little secrets are you keeping from me?”

“Goodbye, Jessica. I’ll meet you in the events room at four, as we agreed to last week.” Ben glared at her.

She looked like she was going to put up a fight, then glided to the door. “Fine. I’m sorry to interrupt. I’ll see you later.” The sun shone down on her face when she reached the sand and it softened her features. She looked like she belonged here.

She disappeared around the corner and I opened my mouth, but Ben put his finger to my lips. My pause thundered in my ears as thoughts of earlier rushed to my mind.

A mechanical rumble started behind the cabana and moved away into the woods until I couldn’t hear it anymore.
